The best cats for kids are those that are relaxed, friendly, and love to play. Let’s talk about the birman, ragdoll, Himalayan, Maine coon, and other kid-approved cat breeds.

Cats and kids just seem to go together! A cat can be a warm buddy to cuddle with, a keeper of secrets, and parents will love this pretty easy new family member that teaches kids about patience and responsibility.

Before you choose your new furry friend, you need to think about what your family’s daily life is like, says Teresa Keiger, a cat judge at The Cat Fanciers’ Association. Teresa says to think about these things:

  • Do your kids understand how to be gentle and respectful with pets?
  • Are they good at remembering to close doors?
  • What’s the energy level like at your house?

Teresa says, “Think about how old your kids are and how active they are. That will help you decide if you need a cat that can keep up with them or one that is more laid-back.”

Here are some great cat breeds for families with kids:

1.American Shorthair

These cats are chill and perfect for families. They get along with pretty much everyone, whether they have two legs or four. Plus, they usually live a long time. And since they were originally bred to catch rodents, they can help out around the house.

2.Birman

These cats are gentle, loving, and curious, making them a great choice for families. They love being around people, whether that means playing or helping out with chores.

3.Ragdoll

These big cats are known for being super relaxed and going limp when you pick them up. They love being with their people and will often greet you at the door. They are also smart and enjoy learning new things.

4.Maine Coon

These large cats are playful and loving. They were originally working cats from Maine, and they have a mix of independence and sweetness. They can also work as therapy cats.

5.Abyssinian

If you have older kids, an Abyssinian could be a good fit. These active and smart cats love being around people, though they might not be the best for toddlers. Just know that while they will charm you, they aren’t likely to sit in your lap.

6.Manx

These playful and loyal cats come from the Isle of Man. They are known for their powerful back legs, which let them jump really high. They might even have no tail.

7.European Burmese

These cats stay playful and friendly as they get older. They love being part of the family and will even hang out with the family dog. Once you have one of these cats, you won’t want any other kind.

8.Himalayan

These cute cats are a mix between Siamese and Persian breeds. They are sweet, love to play, and enjoy sitting in laps. Their round faces, big blue eyes, and small noses make them especially adorable.
