A Catholic priest passed away on Sunday following an attack at his church in Nebraska, authorities confirmed.
Father Stephen Gutgsell, serving at St. John the Baptist Church in Fort Calhoun, was attacked at the church’s residence. He was rushed to the University of Nebraska Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries. Local reports say he was 65 years old.
The assault took place at 5:05 a.m. local time on Sunday, reports the Washington County Sheriff’s Office. When deputies got to the scene, they found a suspect in the rectory. This person was arrested and taken to a county jail.
The investigation is still happening. The sheriff’s office hasn’t shared the suspect’s name or how Gutgsell died. Right now, we don’t know why it happened, but they say there’s no more danger to people around.
” The Archdiocese of Omaha is praying for Father Stephen Gutgsell,” said the Archdiocese in a statement. They’re asking everyone to pray with the archbishop for Gutgsell, his family, and the church community.
