Cats are a real puzzle sometimes. You shout their name, and they’re like, “Nah, I’m going this way.” One second, they’re all snug and purring next to you, and the next, they’re off like a shot.
And let’s not even get started on the whole kneading, purring, loafing, and mega-sleeping thing. And us? We’re just here wondering, “Why can’t we nap like that?” But wait, there’s a bigger mystery: Why on earth do cats adore laptops?
So, why are cats obsessed with laptops?
These days, a lot of us are clocking in from the living room. Sure, there’s a ton of hilarious cat memes out there, but the real comedy? Trying to work with a feline coworker.
Picture this: You’re on a video call, and boom, it’s Mr. Whiskers trying to steal your limelight. Or maybe you’re typing an urgent email, and suddenly, your cat thinks your keyboard is the perfect napping spot.
Your cat lounging on your laptop? They’re totally fine with it. But you? Not so much when you spot those typos or when your doc goes messy.
Seriously, why do cats fancy laptops? They’re just flat, cold things. They don’t hand out snacks or give hugs. Maybe it’s a safety thing, kinda like their love for boxes. Or is it something else? Who knows?
Ever wonder why your kitty’s all over your laptop?
Marilyn Krieger, a cat behavior pro and writer of “Naughty No More: Changing Unwanted Behaviors Through Positive Reinforcement,” has a scoop. “Many cats sit on spots such as keyboards and laptops because they are near their favorite person and can be at the center of their attention,” She says, “Usually people reinforce the behavior by petting the cat and/or talking with him. Cats quickly learn that when they sit on the keyboard, they get what they want: attention.”
Some people reckon it’s ’cause laptops are cozy and warm. Cats, you see, are fans of toasty places. They like temps between 85 and 100 degrees – that’s their sweet spot. So catching them snoozing in the sun? Totally makes sense.
But here’s the twist: it’s not just the warmth. Your laptop’s got a special scent your feline friend loves. When your cat rubs its whiskery face all over your computer, it’s kinda saying, “This is mine!” Yep, cats have these nifty scent glands, and they mark stuff as their turf. So when your furball settles down right where you’re typing, it’s their cute way of saying, “I own this.” But then again, didn’t we always know what’s ours is basically theirs?
Trying to get your kitty off your laptop?
If your cat’s computer obsession is getting in the way of work and you’re tempted to shut your furry buddy out, don’t worry, there are solutions! Just avoid doing stuff that might tick your cat off.
“You can break the habit by providing the cat a comfortable and desirable place to settle that is next to you while simultaneously reinforcing and rewarding him with affection and attention when the cat is sitting or lying [in that spot],” Krieger has a trick. “At the same time, discourage him from hanging out on the keyboard by making it an uncomfortable place to sit and difficult to access.”
Here’s a fun idea: Get a fake laptop just for your kitty. It’s not just a toy—it’s got a scratch pad too. So, while you work, your cat can play and scratch without ruining your couch.
