A dental specialist got found guilty last Friday for causing his young girlfriend’s death by giving her risky knockout meds at his place in Maryland.
The jury heard that James Ryan, aged 50, hooked up an IV to give the habit-forming substances to his 25-year-old girlfriend, Sarah Harris. She ended up dead at his home in Montgomery County back in January 2022.
After thinking it over for three hours, the jury said he was guilty of everything, according to the local CBS station, WUSA-TV. He could end up behind bars for up to 55 years. The court will decide when later.
The medical exam showed Sarah kicked the bucket due to a deadly mix of ketamine, propofol, and diazepam.
The people on the legal side said Ryan really didn’t care about Sarah’s well-being. He just kept giving her these drugs, even though her health was going downhill. At her time of death, she only weighed 83 pounds.
Jennifer Harrison, an attorney for the state, pointed out that Ryan was a trained dental surgeon and knew darn well how dangerous those meds were.
“And despite his vast knowledge and training in the field, he continuously provided these dangerous, deadly anesthetic drugs to Sarah Harris over a period of time even as he watched her deteriorate before his eyes,” she told the jury.
“Every time he gave her those drugs — whether he administered them or whether he instructed her on how to administer them to herself — a little bit of Sarah died,” Harrison mentioned, as per The Washington Post. “Until he gave them to her one too many times. And he killed her; he killed Sarah Harris. He created this risk.”
Police Chief Marcus Jones of Montgomery County mentioned some of the stuff used wouldn’t even be for dental stuff, WUSA-TV said.
Ryan kept mum during his trial in Montgomery County Court. His defense? They said Sarah either took her own life or accidentally took too many pills by herself. Defense guy Thomas DeGonia said to the jury that Sarah wanted those pills from Ryan because she felt really down, especially months before she left.
DeGonia also said something about Sarah’s bro passing away, as The Post mentioned.
“On January 25th , the day before she is found [dead], Sarah Harris spends the day with her mother visiting cemeteries and burial plots where she was going to bury her brother,” DeGonia shared, according to the paper.
Sarah met Ryan at his dentist place in Germantown, Maryland. Later, they started seeing each other.
Polices said they shared a roof at Ryan’s place, as CBS Baltimore said. They were together till Sarah’s last day, the police added.
