Fans of “Criminal Minds” are buzzing with anticipation, hoping to see Aaron Hotchner on the “Evolution” spinoff. Their excitement surged when Thomas Gibson, the actor behind the character, dropped a hint that fueled their hopes.

Gibson, now 61, recently posted a photo on Instagram showing him on a strike line with SAG-AFTRA and WGA members. In the photo, he stood alongside Andrew Wilder, 42, a former producer and writer for “Criminal Minds”.

Gibson’s caption read, “Walking the line with scribe extraordinaire Andrew Wilder #sagaftrastrong #wgastrong #unionstrong 🪧,”

Fans quickly speculated on the potential return of Gibson to “Criminal Minds: Evolution” in the comments section. One user commented, ” Andrew was an excellent writer on CM. Thomas, he treated Hotch well on the show. I miss both of you. The 2 of you need to do something together again,”

In another move, a fan started a Twitter petition calling for Gibson’s return to the spinoff series. The petition started in June 2021 and has gathered 832 signatures so far, inching closer to its goal of 1,000.

Gibson’s portrayal of Aaron Hotchner in the original “Criminal Minds” made him a fan favorite.

However, he was temporarily dismissed from the CBS series in 2016 after a reported dispute with show writer Virgil Williams, which involved Gibson kicking Williams.

Reflecting on the incident, Gibson stated, “There were creative differences on the set and a disagreement, I regret that it occurred. We all want to work together as a team to make the best show possible. We always have and always will.”

In that identical month, Gibson discussed his dismissal, sharing with Us Weekly

“I love Criminal Minds and have put my heart and soul into it for the last 12 years. I had hoped to see it through to the end, but that won’t be possible now. I would just like to say thank you to the writers, producers, actors, our amazing crew and, most importantly, the best fans that a show could ever hope to have.”

Gibson subsequently dissected the exchange he had with Williams.

“We were shooting a scene late one night when I went to Virgil and told him there was a line that I thought contradicted an earlier line. He said, ‘Sorry, it’s necessary, and I absolutely have to have it,’” the actor told People in 2016. “He came into that room and started coming towards me. As he brushed past me, my foot came up and tapped him on the leg. If I hadn’t moved, he would have run into me. We had some choice words, for which I apologized the next day, and that was it. It was over. We shot the scene, I went home — and I never got to go back.”

After leaving “Criminal Minds”, Gibson did voiceover work for the 2017 film “Axis” and starred in the short-lived series “Shadow Wolves.”

Meanwhile, “Criminal Minds” continued airing until 2020, with the spinoff “Criminal Minds: Evolution” taking off two years later on Paramount+.

The spinoff stars series originals Joe Mantegna, A.J. Cook, Kirsten Vangsness, Aisha Tyler, Adam Rodriguez, and Paget Brewster.
