A pregnant woman and her unborn baby tragically died after her toddler found a gun and accidentally shot her in the back last week, according to Ohio cops.
Laura Ilg, 31, dialed 911 last Friday afternoon, saying she was 33 weeks pregnant and her 2-year-old son had shot her, as per a statement by the Norwalk Police Department.
Her hubby, Alek, reported just moments later that his wife had called him, screaming out for him to ring the cops.
Cops released the 911 call audio, where you can hear a frightened Ilg begging for help.
“I’m upstairs, I need help,” she told the dispatcher.
“Is your front door unlocked?” the dispatcher asked.
“Tell them to bust in, please, hurry,” she begged before letting out a scream.
Cops reached the house at 1:14 p.m., just three minutes after her initial call, and busted into the house. As they tended to her, she told them what happened, police mentioned.
“Laura was transported to Fisher Titus Medical Center, where an emergency cesarean section took place,” the cops said.
Her unborn son was declared dead less than an hour after the 911 call, and Ilg passed away at 5:10 p.m., the police reported.
The responding cops seized the gun, a Sig Sauer P365, plus a shell casing and the loaded magazine. Both Ilgs told the cops that the handgun was usually stored in a nightstand in their bedroom. They also found a 12-gauge shotgun and an airsoft rifle in the house, cops mentioned.
No charges have been brought yet, but the police said the findings of their investigation would be passed on to the local prosecutor’s office.
Chatting with WOIO, a local CBS branch, Norwalk’s Police Chief, David Smith, said that although the house had several kid-safety features, a lot of the gates were usually left open.
“The gun was left out, but it shouldn’t have been accessible to the child,” Smith said. “Apparently she didn’t know he was in the room at the time.”
