From an energetic Australian Cattle Dog to a hearty Toy Fox Terrier, here’s the verified rundown of the longest-living dogs on record.

There’s often lively debate among dog owners about whose furry friend holds the title of the oldest pooch, and figuring out who’s correct isn’t simple.

Since most dog breeds live an average of 8 to 15 years, it’s not often we see verified records of dogs who’ve hit the big 2-0.

So, it’s quite likely there are dogs out there who’ve outlived the ones on our list, like Maggie, an Australian Cattle Dog, reported to have reached the ripe old age of 30.

For our list, we’re using the Guinness World Records data, which verifies the birth and death certificates of these record-breaking hounds.

1. Bluey –  29 years and 5 months

While many pet parents have tried to claim their pup as the ‘oldest dog’, Bluey is the only one with dates of birth and death officially checked by Guinness World Records.

Bluey, a female Australian Cattle Dog who lived on a farm in Rochester, Victoria, Australia, herded sheep and cattle for almost three decades. This active lifestyle may have contributed to her reaching a respectable age of 29 years and 5 months.

Her longevity helped studies show that Australian Cattle Dogs, on average, live about a year longer than similar-sized breeds, averaging around 13.4 years. But given Bluey more than doubled that, it’s clear she had a little extra something in her genes!

2. Butch – 28 years

Next up is Butch the Beagle from Virginia, who lived a notable 28 years. Born in 1975, Butch was said to be spry and playful right up until his death in 2003, with his owners fondly calling him eternally young.

While Butch didn’t outlast Bluey, he holds the record for the oldest Beagle, with his nearest competitor only reaching 20 years.

3. Snookie – 27 years and 284 days

With an average lifespan of 13-15 years, Snookie the Pug outdid all expectations, living to an astonishing 27 years and 284 days. Not much is known about Snookie, other than she lived in South Africa and passed away in 2018.

No other Pug has come close to Snookie’s record, with the next longest-living Pug, King Tug, reaching 18 years in 2020.

4. Taffy – 27 years and 211 days

Taffy the Welsh Collie, born in September 1975 and died in March 2003, lived in the United Kingdom and reached an age of 27 years and 211 days.

A mix of a Welsh Sheepdog and a Border Collie, Welsh Collies are known for their excellent herding skills and love of working outdoors.

5. Adjutant – 27 years

Not much is known about Adjutant, except that he was born in 1936 and died in 1963, making him another 27-year-old pooch. The oldest Labrador Retriever on record, Adjutant lived in the United Kingdom, where he worked as a gamekeeper’s dog.

6. Buksi – 26 / 27 years

Buksi, a mixed-breed dog partly Swiss Shepherd, was a celebrity in his homeland, Hungary. His exact age wasn’t clear as his birth month in 1990 was unsure, but with his passing in 2017, he was noted to have lived between 26 and 27 years.

7. Pusuke – 26 years

Pusuke, the Shiba Inu mix, born April 1, 1985, and passed on December 5, 2011, surpassed his expected lifespan of 15 years quite handsomely.

A lucky fellow, Pusuke hit a scary patch in 2008 when he got injured by a car. However, successful surgery helped him bounce back and live three more years.

Living in Japan with his family, Pusuke enjoyed good health until his last hours, passing away peacefully in his sleep, surrounded by his loved ones.

The oldest living dog in 2022

As of April this year, Toby Keith, a 21-year-old Chihuahua, was the reigning oldest dog alive, according to Guinness World Records. But hold your horses! Bobby and Julie Gregory of South Carolina had something to say. Their dog, Pebbles, was even older.

Pebbles, a petite but vibrant Toy Fox Terrier, was born on March 28, 2000, making her a solid 22-years-old. Despite her small stature, Pebbles boasts a huge personality, though she does get a bit grouchy when disturbed from sleep. Mostly, she’s a chill and affectionate girl.

“Pebbles is like a wild teen who loves to sleep during the day and is up all night,” says Julie. “She loves listening to country music while she is sleeping. Her two favorite country singers are Conway Twitty and Dwight Yokum.”

Pebbles had a life partner, Rocky, and together they had 24 puppies across three litters. Unfortunately, Rocky passed away in 2017 at 16, leaving Pebbles widowed.

Though she mourned deeply, Pebbles slowly rediscovered her zest for life and now enjoys strolls with Bobby, whom she adores.

Julie’s secret to a dog’s long and happy life? “Treat them like family because they are. Give them a happy positive environment as much as possible, good clean food and proper healthcare.”

Julie and Bobby adore Pebbles and are thrilled that her world record gives her some well-deserved spotlight. “We are truly honored. Pebbles has been with us through everything; ups and downs, good times and bad, and she has always been the beacon of our lives.”
