A man they think had something to do with a bad attack in Mexico, where 9 Americans were hurt, was caught in New Mexico. This happened a long time ago, about four years.
The U.S. cop group said they caught Ivan Gustavo Hernandez-Cabral, who’s 24, in Albuquerque. Someone told them a hint, and they found him. They didn’t say how they did it.
This man, Hernandez-Cabral, is now waiting to be sent back to Mexico. This is all about that day in 2019 when three moms and six kids got hurt on a road in Sonora.
Five kids got away from the bad guys who shot at cars full of families. These families lived nearby and had ties to both the U.S. and Mexico.
The big family was going to a wedding. The cops said the bad guys even hurt some so bad they didn’t make it out.
When the bad thing happened, some people in Mexico said the family was in a spot where two bad groups had fought earlier. They think one group got mixed up and hurt the family.
People sent voice messages that were super sad after everything happened.
One lady said, “Dawna and Christina are gone. They are not — they are dead,”
“They opened fire… killed Dawna and the baby. And another one… and Dawna’s yelling at the kids to get down,” a man said in another.
A brave 13-year-old boy named Devin hid his brothers and sisters when his mom and two brothers got hurt. He walked a super long way to get help. His little sister, McKenzie, got a small hurt on her arm. She also walked a long time in the dark till she found someone to help.
By 2021, Mexican police had caught about 20 people they think did it. But they’re still looking for more.
They also caught Hernandez-Cabral when he came to the U.S. in a wrong way. He’s waiting for a meeting in court about it.
When they asked Hernandez-Cabral’s lawyer, Mr. Ibarra, about all this, he didn’t say anything right away.
Last year, a big judge said one of the bad groups had to give the hurt families a lot of money.
